No classroom walls? No homework? That is correct! Since 1978, MSOE Naturalists have been engaging students in outdoor science classes and team building initiatives, while hiking through 300 acres of redwood, mixed evergreen forest, and chaparral ecosystems. Our classes are aligned with California State Science Standards for 4-6th grade. A student who attended in 2006 commented, “This was a great experience and I will always have memories about this week. This week really changed me. I care more now.” |

A message from the MSOE Director, Jeremy Geels: The Outdoor Education department had a busy summer preparing for our fall school groups. Our Naturalists all took the “summer off”, if you call working with kids in Guatemala, teaching English for 3 weeks to Korean students, teaching backpacking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and cooking at Au Sable Institute in Northern Michigan, taking the “summer off.” All of the “old” and “new” Naturalists arrived in August for training and our first school group arrived on September 4th. We are excited to welcome five new schools this fall; plus our two new schools attending our Eco-Adventures program. This new program, which was started last year, is geared toward junior high and high school students. During an Eco-Adventure, students embark on a 5-day venture in which they are encouraged to grow in their walk with the Lord, their relationships with teachers and peers, and learn more about God’s creation. Students participate in a variety of team-building activities including our high ropes course, ecology classes, zip line, flying squirrel and a night hike. We are looking forward to an exciting and adventurous fall program! |
